I remember it well. I went to work that day…I worked for environmental attorneys, most of whom were very upset about what they were hearing and most decided to evacuate. Knowing that these highly educated men were afraid made me even more scared and I went home and loaded my Volkswagen Beetle with my most important possessions and headed to my sister’s house in Lower Paxton Township. However, I quickly remembered that she and her husband were at the hospital where their 7-month old son (my nephew) had just had surgery for Pyloric Stenosis.
I kept looking through my rear view mirrors expecting to see a large white cloud of radiation
I begged them to let me pay for an ambulance to take my nephew to a hospital out of the range of a possible meltdown of TMI. However, even though they were afraid, too, they decided to stay and put it in God’s hands. I, however, continued on by my myself, heading south to VA Beach where our brother lived.
I remember as I left the area, I kept looking through my rear view mirrors expecting to see a large white cloud of radiation over the Harrisburg area. I remember crying and praying a lot on that journey. I stayed in VA Beach for about 5 days until the media said that a major disaster was averted and then I returned home. That week was one of the most frightening weeks of my life.
