I was a newlywed and we had moved to rural Bedford county, about 25 miles from where Flight 93 would crash in later years.
We had told my parents, living in Hellam, that if they had to evacuate they should come to the mountains. We did not think the winds would come this direction.
In the weeks following the accident, businesses and schools developed plans regarding a nuclear accident.
Dad was a senior maintenance man at Caterpillar Tractor in York and would have to stay at the factory. Mom was a kindergarten aide in Eastern York schools and would have to stay with the kids.
I was always proud of their devotion to their jobs and the people they worked for and with. The plans never had to be used but I admired my parents for their willingness to stay at work in such a case.
