Back in 1979, I was a young teacher at the Carlisle School District. When the news of the TMI emergency was announced to the staff, we were advised of the “opportunity” to help settle folks who would be leaving the immediate TMI area to be brought to our schools for temporary housing. Apparently, someone’s view was that the danger area was within a mere 20 miles, and our schools were 23 miles away!

Needless to say, that theory wasn’t very convincing. As a result, my then-spouse and I began making lists of items we would pack in our two cars and head northwest if the situation worsened. Happily, it did not.
