I was 10 in elementary school and we were all called to the gym. They told us we were being dismissed early. I always think how ironic it was that it happened on my mom’s week day off, otherwise she may not have known we were coming home.

It was a beautiful day and I remember sitting on the swing in our backyard. The next day or so we evacuated to my grandparents’ house in Atlantic City. My parents left us there because they owned a pet store at Park City and had to be there. My mom told me when I was an adult how hard it was for her because no one knew what was going to happen and she may not see us again.

When we got back and went to school, the kids who did not evacuate bragged about how they were one of the few kids in the school, like the rest of us were wimps!
