Back in 1979 I was training race horses at Penn National for Mike Benson, a nuclear engineer at TMI. Mike was one of the guys in the white suits that went into the reactor.
At that time our two oldest sons were 7 and 8 years old. We were concerned. My wife’s brother and sister-in-law lived in Denver, Colorado. I asked Mike if we should send them out to Colorado. Mike responded, “That wouldn’t be far enough.”
Also at that time, we were living on a fam in New Oxford, PA which was just over 25 miles from TMI. Other trainers were asking if they could send horses to the farm to be over the 25-mile radius as if everything would stop at 25 miles.
Soon after the accident, a horse named “Meltdown” was running at the track
