I lived in Middletown at the time with my husband and daughter. She was attending Middletown High. I was an announcer at a radio station off Route 83 in line-of-sight with the cooling towers of TMI.
My boss had me making certain relevant announcements on air because he felt my voice was “calming.”
My husband at the time, Mike Pintek, was news director at WKBO radio in Harrisburg…and was the person who first broke the story of Three Mile Island. Mike passed away in September of last year. Needless to say, this was a frightening, yet exciting, time in our lives.

PS: While I’ve never attributed these illnesses to the TMI issue, I later suffered from hyperthyroidism and Michael died from pancreatic cancer. Coincidence?
