At the time of the accident at TMI, local television stations were in the process of converting from the use of 16mm film in their news coverage to Electronic News Gathering (ENG) using portable video tape equipment.
In March of 1979 I was working at Channel 27 which was the first station in the area to make the conversion and I served as their first ENG Supervisor.
After a thirty-seven year career, including 29 years with the ABC Television Network, I have retired from broadcasting and have returned to Central Pennsylvania.
I have written a memoir of about working behind-the-scenes in broadcasting. It tells of what went on to bring viewers coverage of major events. An entire chapter of the book is devoted to the Three Mile Island incident.
I was fortunate in that Harold Denton, then Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation for the NRC agreed to be interviewed and Mr. Denton subsequently reviewed what I had written for technical accuracy. You may find that portion of the book worth reading.
