I lived in the Wilkes-Barre area at the time of the meltdown and worked for a borough government. They had scheduled me to meet with a State Senator in the Capitol on, I believe, Friday of that week. I tried to get out of the meeting because of TMI, but the Council insisted that I go and pretty much made my job contingent on making the trip.

as I was locking the car, a loud siren went off

I pulled into the Capitol, parked my car and as I was locking the car, a loud siren went off. I froze in panic. I looked around and noticed that people were just walking around, ignoring the siren. I then looked at my watch and saw that it was exactly noon. Apparently there was a noon siren in Harrisburg every day. I relaxed a little and went to the meeting, but I never forgot the panic I felt.
