I wasn’t trying to leave — I was trying to get home.

After spending a few days in Montreal on business, I went back to my hotel and turned on the evening news to check weather conditions prior to my flight to Harrisburg the next morning. The news of a nuclear mishap in Pennsylvania that day was the top story, but I thought the Canadians were probably just overplaying the situation — until I got to the airport on March 29, 1979 to find my flight was delayed and rerouted to Philadelphia. But those were the days before cell phones, 24 hour news and instant information. So without much to go on, other than my desire to be home in the security of my friends, I made my way back to Lancaster.

And how ironic –I remember going to see The China Syndrome downtown that weekend!
