It is hard to believe that almost 40 years have passed since the TMI disaster.

I was only nine years old at the time and in 4th grade.  I remember my parents talking about something scary that happened in Middletown. We lived in Lebanon at the time, about 30 minutes from TMI.  They told me that steam had escaped into the air and we might need to leave our home.  It was the first time in my life that I saw my parents afraid.

It was the first time in my life that I saw my parents afraid.

My parents decided that we would pack up our valuables, cats, and head for Baltimore to stay with my dad’s aunt and uncle.  My mom packed her wedding silver and photo albums because there was a chance that we might not be able to return to the area if there was a nuclear meltdown.  I had no idea what that was, but it sounded bad.

We were gone for a week before the all clear was given and we came home. I was so relieved that we could return to our home, but since 1979, I always worried that it could happen again.
