Like everyone, my wife and I were completely in the dark about what the situation really was.

My father (who had remarried) finally was able to call us as the phone lines were a mess.

He told me that his father in law called him to give us a message. His father in law worked on the Manhattan Project during WWII and the simple message to us was “GET THE HELL OUT OF THERE!”

“GET THE HELL OUT OF THERE!”

My wife and I had only been married for one month.

We packed the car prioritising survival needs and any of the few keepsakes we would want to have because returning to our house was looking like a 50-50 proposition.

I was looking desperately for our wedding album with no luck.

Finally, my wife asked asked what I was doing and when I told her she paused and told me, ” We don’t have an album, it has hasn’t come back from the photographer ”

Packing to leave forever is a memory not to be soon forgotten…..
