1977-1979, I worked as a computer programmer for the Bureau of Air Quality in the Department of Environmental Resources in the upper stories of the Fulton Bank building in downtown Harrisburg. I rented a studio apartment at the corner Second & Muench Streets, a few blocks from the Governor’s Mansion. I remember the protests in front of the mansion: “BETTER ACTIVE THAN RADIO-ACTIVE”, etc.
“BETTER ACTIVE THAN RADIO-ACTIVE”
There was talk of evacuations and putting people up in the Farm Show building. By Friday, I was concerned about my observance of the Jewish Sabbath which would begin that evening at sundown. Although schools were closed, my office was open; and I asked permission to leave early that afternoon. Permission was granted.
Taking the train back to my parents house in Philly, I had second thoughts about my decision because I feared the path of the train would take me closer to TMI. Nevertheless I kept on.
I may have come back on Sunday and returned to work Monday morning, but I am not sure. I any case, I regretted my exit and wished I stayed for the adventure.
