I was in Naval Nuclear Power School, Orlando, FL, just starting the theoretical part of my studies to become a submarine nuclear power plant operator.

We were determined to learn the lesson TMI provided us.

The TMI accident’s affect on me was very different from local residents. Specifically, about two years after the accident, the causes of the accident had become known, and we in the Navy began learning what the TMI operators saw, and how they misinterpreted what they saw. Furthermore, we started to get a LOT of training based on results of studies of the TMI accident. Training drill scenarios were designed to mimic as closely as possible the indications that fooled the operators of TMI. The scenarios were tailored to fit our boat’s reactor (not TMI’s). That is, to mimic the control indications we would receive if we were to have a similar loss of coolant accident (LOCA). We were determined to learn the lesson TMI provided us.
